About Project

IconCal is a unique calendar application designed around the idea of visual scheduling. Unlike traditional text-heavy calendar apps such as Apple or Google Calendar, IconCal allows users to track and manage events using icons. Users can drag icons from a sidescroll footer onto a monthly calendar to represent activities or appointments and can even create custom icons by taking photos. This icon-first approach makes the app particularly valuable for children, individuals with low literacy skills, and people with developmental or cognitive disabilities, as it replaces the reliance on text with intuitive visuals. To further enhance accessibility, the app integrates haptic feedback, giving users tactile confirmation when they interact with icons.

Client Requirements

The primary requirement for IconCal was to rebuild the existing app in Flutter, ensuring cross-platform compatibility, improved performance, and a scalable codebase that could be maintained and enhanced over time. Beyond this migration, future requirements included an icon editor that would allow users to design and customize their own icons, improved notifications for timely reminders, AI integration to suggest or auto-generate icons/events, and internationalization to make the app accessible across different languages and cultures. The challenge was to retain the simplicity and accessibility of the app while making it future-ready with modern features.

Solutions We Delivered

To meet the project’s immediate needs, we rebuilt IconCal in Flutter, ensuring a smooth, reliable, and unified experience across both iOS and Android. The new version maintained the app’s core functionality of an icon-based calendar, allowing users to drag, drop, and manage icons with ease, while integrating haptics natively in Flutter for responsive tactile feedback. We structured the app’s architecture with a forward-looking approach, making it easy to integrate additional features such as a customizable icon editor, advanced notification systems, AI-driven event recommendations, and internationalization support. By leveraging Flutter’s cross-platform strengths and aligning with accessibility-focused design, we delivered a modernized version of IconCal that preserves its unique identity while being scalable for future growth. The result is a calendar app that remains distinct from traditional text-based solutions, empowering users with visual, interactive, and inclusive scheduling tools.
